The Budget session of the Parliament began on Monday, where the Opposition was clearly prepared to confront the NDA government on numerous important issues, such as the NEET paper leakage scam and railway insecurity. It was ironic that despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi going to the media before the proceedings, he did not entertain any questions. In this session, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will be laying the Economic Survey in the Parliament on July 22 and the Union Budget for 2024-25 in Lok Sabha on July 23. This is the first Post-General Budget of the Modi government after the newly formed NDA government came into power for the third time.

Seventh Budget to be Announced on 23rd July

Sitharaman will be presenting her seventh successive Federal Budget, a record of sorts as she will outdo the late Morarji Desai, the 4th Prime Minister of India, who presented five annual Budgets and one interim Budget from October 1959 till 1964 as an Indian Finance Minister. After her appointment to the Union Finance Minister portfolio in 2019, Sitharaman has delivered six Union budgets, including an interim one in February this year.

Proceedings in this Session

The session is planned for sixteen sittings and is to be completed on the eighth of August. Speaking about this, the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, informed us that the major part of the proceedings would consist of financial business connected with the Union Budget for 2024-25, which is expected to be presented on July 23.

The papers likely to be laid on the table of the Lok Sabha on Monday include papers that are to be presented by the Union Ministers Jayant Chaudhary, Pankaj Chaudhary Kritivardhan Singh, and Sukanta Majumdar. Talks under Rule 377 will also be expected. Responding to the glitches in accessing her party’s app, MP Priyanka Chaturvedi brought a 2023 RBI report on the increase in bank frauds, including digital frauds involving phishing calls, phishing websites, and state-sponsored hacking of politicians, journalists, etc.
