The Border Security Force (BSF) and, Punjab Police jointly recovered a cache of arms from near the India-Pakistan border in Amritsar district of Punjab in a significant security operation. On Thursday, it failed in a bid to raid the field near Mahawa village near the border: Six pistols and 14 magazines were seized during the operation.
The official BSF spokesperson said that the recovery came as a result of a well-coordinated and swift joint search operation of the BSF with the local police forces. A suspicious packet was found during the search when a harvested field was found to contain it. The packet was wrapped in yellow adhesive tape and had a metal wire ring tied to it, perhaps so that this packet would be easy to identify or have them reach for it.
Security people found six sophisticated pistols when they opened the package, together with 14 loaded magazines. This was presented as a big success in the continuing efforts to check illegal weapons trafficking and terror-related activities on Punjab’s border.
This operation is seen as a display of a high level of coordination and vigilance maintained by the BSF and Punjab Police in the sensitive border zones frequently targeted for terror infiltration and cross-border smuggling. This timely action avoided the illegal weapons from falling into the hands of the wrong persons.
However, officials have stated that tracking the source of the arms and identifying any possible links of the arms to terror outfits or smuggling networks in operation on the other side of the border are still ongoing investigations. The noticeable appearance of the metal ring and packaging suggests the weapons could have been airborne and fell across the border through the use of drones, which is becoming a popular practice adopted by anti-national elements.
After recovering, security forces have increased the surveillance of the area and are now going in search of operations to make sure the rest of the contraband from that area is not recaptured.
