The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) suspended a member of the legislative council (MLC), Kalvakuntla Kavitha, daughter of party president and former chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), on allegations of engaging in anti-party activities. BRS is in charge of disciplinary affairs. General secretary Soma Bharat Kumar and general secretary (organisation) T. Ravinder Rao announced it in a statement on Tuesday. According to the leadership, KCR had resolved to impose a severe disciplinary measure and expel Kavitha from the party on an immediate basis.
As per the claim, the BRS top management was very concerned with the recent behaviour of Kavitha and believed that her behaviour and statements in the press were directly harming the reputation of their party. This verdict was decided only a day after Kavitha made strong accusations against her cousins, former irrigation minister T. Harish Rao and former MP J. Santosh Rao. She charged them with piling up massive wealth at the expense of making her father, KCR, a scapegoat in the scandal involving the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project, which is under probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Kavitha added further to state that, when the BRS president was compelled to respond to a CBI inquiry, there was no point to the existence of the BRS. Any irregularities associated with the Kaleshwaram project, she directly attributed to Harish Rao and Santosh Rao, calling them anacondas of corruption who have duped KCR and enriched themselves in the process.
This suspension is another blowback to Kavitha after a rough political month. In early 2024, she was arrested in relation to the Delhi liquor policy scam and spent almost half a year in jail; she was released on August 24. Once she got back, Kavitha attempted to re-enter politics as an independent campaigner on behalf of OBCs, something that is said to have angered the party leadership. Kavitha is now uncertain of her future outside the BRS with this expulsion.
