India’s leading online ticketing platform, BookMyShow, has reportedly removed all content related to comedian Kunal Kamra like his artist profile and upcoming shows. It is in response to a formal letter sent by Rahool N Kanal, general secretary of the Yuva Shiv Sena, who asked for the platform to stop promoting Kamra’s events because he was allegedly putting out controversial content.
In his letter dated April 2, Kanal identified himself as a concerned citizen and objected to the content that he believed BookMyShow was willing to allow on comedians, due to which he could provoke the public into creating discord. In his own capacity as a concerned citizen, Rahool N Kanal wrote a letter to you highlighting a subject of grave public interest regarding the operations of BookMyShow. Kanal also criticised Kamra’s “offensive behaviour” and alleged he’s made a situation of vilification a campaign against high-profile leaders, including the Prime Minister, ministers, deputy chief ministers and people of stature.
After this, Kamra’s name and any other related listings were taken down by BookMyShow, which put a stop to ticket sales for any of the shows marked on the ecosystem of the site.
Kunal Kamra, too, is in legal trouble. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police received a complaint, which was filed by a Shiv Sena representative claiming that the financial transactions of Kamra are connected to his content. The complaint contends that the comedian if he received funding from foreign sources via his digital media work, may not have been entirely honest about where his income streams came from.
This is not Kunal Kamra’s first controversy because his comedy has never shied away from the politically charged, and his outspoken comments have often come under fire from different quarters. The option to buy tickets on BookMyShow for the comedian’s shows, however, remains closed, and the comedian has not yet commented on this.
