Chhonzin Angmo became the first blind Indian woman to climb Mount Everest. With no vision, Angmo still managed to accomplish her goal of reaching the summit and posted the Indian Tricolour there.
Being blind since she was eight, Angmo has always worked hard not to let that slow her down. Using Helen Keller as her role model, she lives by the strong saying: “Having no vision is worse than being blind. What she achieved demonstrates the truth of that belief.”
Despite facing many difficulties, Angmo was born near the India and Tibet border on Chango village, where she obtained an education. After completing both her graduation and master’s at Miranda House, International University Association, she works as a customer service associate for Union Bank of India in Delhi.
“The father of our hero, Amar Chand, voiced strong pride over his daughter’s triumph. She has done us all proud. We are all interested to hear about her experiences when she gets back,” he told reporters.
Her achievement has made her hometown very proud and given her community inspiration. Local residents in Chango are congratulating her for her success, remembering that she had been strong and brave from when she was young. Yamchin described his relative as both bold and determined since childhood.
Her success at the top stood for overcoming many of the challenges that lots of people dealing with mental health issues face. The first chapter of my story has not finished yet. Angmo had said in the past that her blindness has helped make her stronger, not weaker. Only five people who are blind have ever reached Everest’s summit, and we can now add Bina to that list.
