An explosion at around 9:30 AM on Tuesday left a suspected terrorist injured in the Majitha Road Bypass area of Amritsar, Punjab officials reported. In the beginning, the explosion looked like it was the result of mishandling explosive products in the area. Later in the day, authorities started a probe into the possibility of a terror link.
The explosion caused a loud disturbance, and alert residents informed the police and went to the site. Police and security arrived shortly after and shut off access to the site. After his arms were reportedly torn off by the explosion, the injured individual was sent via ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Police ruled out terrorist or gang activity at the start of their investigation. It was thought that the injured man was trying to break up an old bomb discovered in waste metal when it exploded. Additional investigations and new intelligence information required a change in how the incident was described.
A government representative announced in the evening that the injured man is considered a suspected terrorist, meaning anti-terror and bomb experts are now involved in the case. The government has strengthened security around the blast site, and experts are collecting evidence from there.
Officials are investigating where the explosive material came from and if the incident might be connected to a larger group. Investigators are now studying the incident linked to both terrorism and illegal arms dealing. More details from the authorities are likely as the investigation goes on.
