SANGAREDDY, TELANGANA – A horrific explosion at Sigachi Chemicals in the Pashamylaram industrial estate of Sangareddy district on Monday claimed the lives of at least 14 people, mostly factory workers, and left 35 others injured. The blast, which occurred during duty hours, trapped dozens inside the facility and sent shockwaves through the industrial hub.

According to Sangareddy police, the force of the explosion was immense, leading to the collapse of a three-story building within the manufacturing unit and triggering a massive fire. Rescue operations, involving fire, police, NDRF, and STRF teams, continued late into the evening as responders worked to clear debris and account for those feared trapped. Initial reports suggest a problem in the air dryer system may have caused the explosion, rather than a reactor blast.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy swiftly responded to the tragedy, appointing a high-level, five-member committee to review and probe the mishap. The committee comprises the Chief Secretary, Special Chief Secretary – Disaster Management, Principal Secretary (Labour), Principal Secretary (Health), and Additional DGP (Fire Services).

CM Revanth Reddy retweeted a tweet originally shared by CMO Telangana which read, “Hon’ble Chief Minister @revanth_anumula garu expressed his deepest condolences and prayers for the loved ones and families of those who lost their lives in today’s tragic accident at a chemical factory in #Pashamylaram, Sangareddy District”.

“In addition to probing this mishap, the panel would also submit a report on ways to prevent such accidents from reoccurring,” Chief Minister Reddy stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving industrial safety. The incident has once again brought to the forefront concerns about safety protocols and their enforcement in the region’s chemical and pharmaceutical industries, which have witnessed several similar accidents in recent years. The Chief Minister is expected to visit the injured and meet with victims’ families on Tuesday, while compensation for the affected is also being considered.
