The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has declared its backing for the Lok Sabha candidates of various regional partners in Northeast India for the 2024 parliamentary elections. The Naga People’s Front (NPF) in the Outer Manipur Constituency, the National People’s Party (NPP) in both seats of Meghalaya (Shillong and Tura), and the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Nagaland will receive BJP’s support. The announcement was made by Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and BJP’s North East Coordinator, Sambit Patra, on X.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh conveyed the decision, stating, “Following BJP’s decision under JP Nadda’s guidance and in line with our alliance principles, BJP will support NPF’s Lok Sabha candidates in the Outer Manipur Constituency for the 2024 Parliamentary elections.” Similarly, Sambit Patra, BJP’s North East Coordinator, remarked, “As per BJP National President JP Nadda’s directives, BJP will back NPP’s Lok Sabha candidates in both Meghalaya seats (Shillong and Tura), NPF in the Outer Manipur Constituency, and NDPP in Nagaland for the upcoming 2024 Parliamentary elections.”
The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are poised to be a significant event in Northeast India’s political landscape. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled polling in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, with vote counting on June 4. Meghalaya will go to polls on April 19, while Manipur’s elections will be held in two phases – April 19 and April 26. Similarly, Nagaland’s election is slated for April 19. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Indian National Congress (INC) and the National People’s Party (NPP) secured one seat each in Meghalaya.
In Manipur, BJP and NPF each clinched one seat, with BJP’s Rajkumar Ranjan Singh winning the Inner Manipur constituency and NPF’s Lorho S Pfoze triumphing in the Outer Manipur constituency. Meanwhile, in Nagaland, the lone Lok Sabha seat was secured by Tokheho Yepthomi of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party.
