J&K Assembly Polls: A list of 82 candidates for the three-phase election to fill 90 Assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir was made public by the BJP today. Three phases of voting will take place in Jammu and Kashmir on September 19, 25, and October 1. The election for J&K assembly polls is scheduled for October 4. After the former state lost its special status in 2019 and was divided into two Union Territories, this is Jammu and Kashmir’s first Assembly election.
This morning, the list was made public following the finalization of the BJP’s poll choices for the forthcoming election by the Central Election Committee. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP chief JP Nadda were at the important meeting in Delhi yesterday.
The most recent assembly election in the state took place in 2014. The BJP had performed admirably in the 2014 election, winning 25 seats. With 28 victories, the PDP had become the single largest party. 12 were taken by the Congress, while 15 were won by the National Conference, which was in power at the time. Following the election, the PDP and the BJP formed an unexpected alliance government, first headed by Mehbooba Mufti after the latter’s passing in 2016. The coalition was first led by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
This time, the National Conference-Congress Alliance, the BJP, and the PDP will compete in a tripartite contest in J&K Assembly polls. However, the National Conference and Congress still need to work out disagreements regarding seat-sharing. Leading Congress leaders Salman Khurshid and KC Venugopal have been rushed to Srinagar in an attempt to remove obstacles from the way of the National Conference’s talks with the local Congress leadership.
Earlier, Vice President Omar Abdullah and President of the National Conference Farooq Abdullah were met by Congressman Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, who then declared their alliance.
BJP general secretary Tarun Chugh, who oversees the party’s campaign in Jammu and Kashmir, criticized the alliance, predicted a humiliating loss for the Congress-National Conference, and said that it will fall apart like a house of cards.
The BJP has candidates in several important Kashmir seats, including Arshid Bhat (Rajpora), Mohd Rafiq Wani (Anantnag West), Javed Ahmad Qadri (Shopian), and Er Syed Showkat Gayoor Andrabi (Pampore). Syed Wazahat from Anantnag, Tariq Keen from Inderwal, Veer Saraf from Shangus-Anantnag East, and Sofi Yousuf from Srigufwara-Bijbehara are some of the others.
