On Monday, BJP members disrupted Rajya Sabha proceedings through their protest because Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar allegedly suggested altering the Constitution to include Muslim reservation benefits. The House adjourned until 2 p.m. during the uproar because no parliamentary activities were conducted.
Minister Kiren Rijiju showed concern about senior political leaders’ statements without mentioning Shivakumar by name in his Rajya Sabha remarks. Rijiju posted on X accusing Congress of publicizing their plan for Constitutional changes to establish Muslim reservations in their social media account. The politician condemned advocates of constitutional protection who avoid speaking out about such statements. Rijiju posted Shivakumar’s video clip about his comments while labelling the issue as “extremely serious” and unacceptable.
D.K. Shivakumar from Bengaluru denied the accusations of his statements by claiming they were misinterpreted. At his stage of senior political experience, totalling three decades he understands constitutionality and denies plans to propose amendments to its text. He stated that his comment addressed ordinary legal developments that naturally follow judicial decisions, but people misunderstood them. According to Shivakumar, the Congress party continues respecting the Constitution without any plans to modify its provisions. The politician emphasized his plans to file legal complaints against those who distributed incorrect information about his remarks.
The media controversy emerged from Shivakumar’s News18 interview on Sunday when he discussed how judicial decisions lead to constitutional modifications. During a Rajya Sabha session, J.P. Nadda, who serves as the BJP leader, accused the Congress party of distorting the vision of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar by asking Mallikarjun Kharge to clarify how the party stands regarding religious reservation policies.
