Senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has drawn rare compliments from leaders of the BJP after his opinion piece addressing India’s dynastic politics generated widespread discussion. In the Project Syndicate article “Indian Politics Are a Family Business,” Tharoor stated that dynasty-dominated politics are a serious danger to Indian democracy. In the article, Tharoor mentions numerous political families and parties, including families associated with the Indian National Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK, Trinamool Congress, and National Conference, while observing how political power in India is frequently passed down from parent to child.
Since the article’s publication it has generated public praise from BJP leaders to Tharoor for his outspoken views. Spokesman of the BJP, Shehzad Poonawalla, praised the Congress MP, calling him a “Khatron Ke Khiladi” for being a Congress MP who criticized the dynastic nature of his own party, and indirectly criticized Rahul Gandhi.
Poonawalla referred to Tharoor’s article as “insightful”, saying it clearly lays out how the Gandhi-Vadra family has may have conditioned the general public to believe the to leadership in Congress is a right of birthright. The unusual displays of appreciation of Tharoor’s voice by the BJP have furthered inner talk amongst Congress leadership in the regard that Tharoor is voicing for critique.
