The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday took a swipe at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his understanding of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan of ‘Ek hain toh safe hain’ – ‘we are safe if we are together’. In response to Gandhi’s tweet, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra called Gandhi a “chota popat” or a young parakeet, who, according to Patra, is damaging his party.
Patra also pointed out that the word “safe” used by the Prime Minister means safe in a military and moral sense. He said further, “It also means a lockbox, which the Congress has been pilfering for years.” Patra accused the Gandhi family of concealing corruption in a “safe” and referred to Rahul and Sonia Gandhi as the “accused no 1 and 2”, respectively. The BJP also came out with a rib-tickling counter-poster in which the Congress MP’s meme of Modi and Adani is juxtaposed with an image of the Gandhis labelled corrupt and out on bail.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi dismissed Modi’s slogan, saying the latter had asked the youth for the vote to be given to industrialist Gautam Adani. He even claimed that Adani got favours to grab Dharavi for redeveloping the place, for which residents got only ₹1 lakh crore worth of land. Accompanied by loud chants of ‘Gandhi, Gandhi’, the slum-dwelling leader asked in Mumbai: “Who is safe? Adani, who wants to develop a greenfield city or the poor people of Dharavi that do not have proper infrastructure, senior citizens and children’s safety, or women’s safety even in broad daylight?”
Patra rubbished Gandhi’s allegations and scoffed at him for coming up with memes before election time. “Every morning hens lay eggs; in a similar manner, before the elections, Rahul Gandhi shares memes. Wait for November 23 when Congress will score zero in Maharashtra and Jharkhand,” he remarked.
Also, BJP leaders criticized Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for calling the BJP and the RSS ‘poisonous snakes’ during the election campaign at Maharashtra. “This emergency-era mindset incites violence,” Patra said, denouncing Kharge. Kharge had earlier attacked the BJP and RSS as politically extremely nefarious organizations and called upon the people to ‘eliminate such toxic arrows’.
