On Wednesday, West Bengal BJP MLA from Siliguri, Shankar Ghosh, severely criticised the TMC government over the recent arrest of Sharmistha Panoli. Ghosh said the TMC had a “biased and discriminatory attitude toward Hindus,” and claimed that Panoli was arrested by state officials with political intent.
Sharmistha Panoli was arrested last week in Gurugram, Haryana, after she allegedly made communal comments in a ‘Operation Sindoor’ related video. Even though she apologised and deleted the post on May 15, the West Bengal Police still brought her to Kolkata, and she was produced before the Alipore Court for 14 more days of custody.
He said to reporters that the government shows a clear bias against Hindus. In the past, Hindu deities were disparaged by certain TMC MPs and MLAs and FIRs were registered, but no steps were taken. Sharmistha, on the other hand, was taken right away from a nearby state to be presented at the court. This highlights that the government hopes to keep the community satisfied by going after Hindu views.
According to BJP MLA, the state government picks which laws to enforce based on political interests. Diaz noted that they do not act this way when the affected people are citizens of their own countries.
The Calcutta High Court refused to grant Panoli interim bail the day before Ghosh talked about the matter. The ruling points out that free speech is allowed by the Constitution, but cannot be used to cause trouble between communities or upset religious feelings.
India has a wide variety of castes and religious communities. Since she believes freedom of speech is the right to use responsibly, the judge rejected the bail plea. The issue is still causing a lot of debate among the public and politicians within the state.
