According to a senior member of the BJP in Kerala’s Palakkad district, popular rapper Hirandas Murali, known as Vedan, defamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and promoted caste-based differences with one of his recent songs. As per news agency reports, the complaint was sent to both the Union Home Ministry and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
It was the BJP municipal councillor, VS Minimol, and the Palakkad Municipality’s development committee chairperson who filed the complaint. According to her, Vedan often uses harsh and insulting language in his songs, aimed at the Prime Minister and meant to separate Hindus into different groups.
“The artist has said unfounded, rude and insulting things about the Prime Minister which adversely affects both his personal and public standing and hurts the honor of the highest constitutional post in India,” she asserted in the complaint. She recommended police authorities look into the case in line with the defamation, promoting hostility among people and causing public mischief laws of the Indian Penal Code. She also wanted action taken using the Information Technology Act for spreading this type of content online.
Minimol added that the police detained Vedan in April, linking his arrest to a drug case in Tripunithura. After being released on bail, she said that the rapper goes ahead with major concerts and tries to stir up hatred and violence among those present.
This comes after accusations from KP Sasikala, head of Hindu Aikyavedi, who says Vedan’s behaviour and the value of rap music to the SC/ST community have been questioned. Neither Vedan nor anyone he has appointed has released an official reaction to the accusations.
