BJP backs PM Narendra Modi and lists a Congress event after opposition targets his Ganesh Puja visit to CJI DY Chandrachud’s home. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala also pointed out that in 2009, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh invited Chief Justice of India, K. G. Balakrishnan, to ‘The Iftar party.’

Responding to the taunts by Singh and Balakrishnan as they enjoyed the event, Poonawalla posted old photographs and said at the time, the Opposition did not have issues with regard to the independence of the judiciary. He showed the difference in the response now and exposed that whereas PM Modi has been hosting interactions and has even attended a religious event like Ganesh Puja at the house of the Chief Justice of India, the Opposition again wakes up only to warn of the ‘Judiciary being compromised.’

Another critic attacking the Opposition was BJP MP Sambit Patra, who accused the latter of making politics out of the incident. Patra posed whether leaders should refrain from engaging with other arms of democracy to affirm that courtesy between democratic institutions is functional. He pointed out that such interactions are some of the miracles of democracy, whereby heads of state can be on good social terms, even as they are professional.

Patra also criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, referring to his recent face-off with the Young Congresswoman from America, Ilhan Omar. He asked the opposition why they were not bothered by Gandhi’s meetings with the foreign dignitaries, but they frowned at the PM attending a local religious gathering. “Why this double standard?” Patra questioned, also pointing out that both Ganesh Puja and Iftar are important Indian festivities.

Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav also comes in support of the event, arguing that Ganesh puja is all about bringing good luck and unity to people. He accused the Opposition of being the devil’s advocates and called upon them to avoid voicing their protests over events that symbolise the Indian culture. These are the words of Yadav, who appealed for respect and harmony, saying, “Do not belittle our festivals.”
