New Delhi: A recent stand that raised controversy was when BJP MP Anurag Thakur commented on the caste of the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi. The Congress party has criticised Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi for escalating the matter further by sharing the remarks on Twitter and thus violating the parliamentary privilege. In addition, they even deleted Thakur’s comment from the house proceedings recording; however, Modi tweeted X (formerly Twitter) the comment, adding another level to the scandal.

Punjab Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi served the legal notice for privilege motion before the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Channi, an independent member representing the scheduled caste, said he was disturbed that Modi had decided to go public with the remarks the speaker had deleted. During the communication to Birla, Channi said, “I hereby give notice to move a privilege motion under Rule 222 of the Rules of Procedure and conduct of Business in Lok sabha against the Prime minister for having tweeted on ‘X’ a portion of the remarks which were expunged from the proceedings of the house by the chair”.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was equally unhappy with what Thakur said and asked whether it was an insult of Rahul Gandhi deliberately. He described chiding based on caste as grossly inappropriate and inauspicious for the parliamentary proceedings. He said, “Chiding in the House – this is not done in Parliament… Nobody’s caste is evoked in the Parliament …He (Anurag Thakur) said this intentionally to demean him ( Rahul Gandhi). ”

Kharge also banned superior Prime Minister Modi for retreating Thakur’s discourse on social media, claiming he wished to fuel the crowd. ‘PM Modi should know where to speak and who to defend’, Kharge said.

Also, Congress’ deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, said that the opposition INDIA bloc protested inside the House against what the block members described as insulting and inhuman words of BJP leaders concerning caste census.
