Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT cell chief, on Thursday, lashed out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, claiming that he was latching hook up with global networks that were trying to question the interests of India. Reacting to a recent allegation that the previous Joe Biden administration tried to interfere with India’s elections by a man like Trump, he said.

Trump posed the rhetorical question of why, in a country that spends a good chunk of its budget on the military, the US government had given $21 million to the electoral work of Indian voters’ in a speech during the FII PRIORITY Summit in the US. “There is no reason to spend $21 million to reach voter turnout in India.’ I guess they were trying to elect someone else. We have got to tell the Indian Government…” Trump said “this is a total breakthrough.”

In reaction to this, Malviya claimed that Rahul Gandhi was proactively looking for foreign involvement in India’s matters ahead of the 2024 election to the Lok Sabha. Rahul Gandhi tweeted a video that he shared from March 2023, in which he addressed the Indian Journalists’ Association in London. Malviya has observed that, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election in March 2023, ‘Rahul Gandhi was in London, delivering calls to foreign powers, ranging from the US to Europe, to bother in India’s internal affairs.’

Malviya has also said that Rahul Gandhi had positioned himself as a tool used by foreign agencies to work against India’s strategic as well as geopolitical interests. Trump’s remarks validated concerns that there was indeed such an attempt to influence India’s elections and prevent Prime Minister Narendra Modi from getting a second term, he said.

Meanwhile, the BJP’s Goa unit also mocked Rahul Gandhi, asking why he is so often travelling to the US and the UK. Given Trump’s allegations, party leaders suggested that these trips now looked more suspicious, and they called for a closer examination of Gandhi’s international appointments.
