Kolkata rape and murder case: The state of West Bengal will witness a widespread Bengal bandh on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, following violent clashes between protesters and Kolkata Police during a ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally on the previous day. The bandh, called by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Sukanta Majumdar, was aimed at protesting the alleged corruption and mismanagement of the state government under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally, which was organized to demand the resignation of the state government, turned violent as protesters clashed with police forces near the state secretariat, Nabanna. The clashes resulted in injuries to both protesters and police personnel and several arrests were made. Dr. Sukanta Majumdar has urged the intervention of Governor Dr. CV Ananda Bose to release the students arrested.
The Bengal bandh, which had a significant impact on normal life in the state, saw most shops and businesses remaining closed, and public transport services were disrupted. The state government, however, claimed that the bandh had little effect on the functioning of government offices and essential services.
The opposition Trinamool Congress accused the state government of using excessive force against peaceful protesters, while the ruling All India Trinamool Congress blamed the opposition for instigating violence. The clashes and subsequent bandh have further heightened political tensions in the state, and it remains to be seen how the situation will evolve in the coming days.
