New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi’s comments equating BJP with violent Hindus sparked strong protests from the saffron party MPs and prompted an intervention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM Modi stood to interrupt the Congress MP, stating, “Accusing the entire Hindu community of violence is a very serious allegation.” To this, the Congress said that Rahul Gandhi was only referring to the BJP and not the entire Hindu community.

This was Rahul Gandhi’s first address as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha. At the beginning of his speech, the Congress MP brandished a copy of the Constitution and a photo of Lord Shiva while criticising the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Lok Sabha on Monday witnessed a fiery speech by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party on several issues, including the Agnipath Scheme and NEET-UG paper leak.

The Bharatiya Janata Party – led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh – hit back strongly to Rahul Gandhi‘s Monday afternoon speech in Parliament, accusing the Congress MP, and new Leader of the Opposition, of insulting all Hindus. This was after Mr Gandhi – who came armed to deliver his first speech as the LoP with a copy of the Constitution and photos of religious figures, including Lord Shiva – launched a fierce attack on the BJP and its ideological mentor, the RSS.Mr Modi rose twice to rebut the Congress leader’s remarks.

During his speech, the lower house of Parliament also saw Narendra Modi intervene twice when Rahul Gandhi accused leaders of the ruling party of dividing people on communal lines.

“Calling the entire Hindu society violent is a serious issue…” Mr Modi said first. His second intervention drew jeers from his rivals; the Prime Minister declared the Constitution had taught him to respect the post of the Leader of the Opposition, which is held today by Mr Gandhi. The jeers were because the opposition has claimed the government is trying to subvert the Constitution – a charge the BJP has trashed – and Mr Gandhi was among MPs adding “Jai Samvidhan” to their oaths last month.
