The BJP on Saturday stepped up its attack on Congress, holding Priyanka Gandhi guilty of submitting the wrong documents in her election affidavit in the Wayanad by-election.
BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia claimed that Priyanka Gandhi’s husband, Robert Vadra, has shares in many more companies than he has declared in his wife’s nomination papers, which he dubbed unethical politics. They now refer to this couple as Bunty and Bubbly, referencing whether they are involved in lying in the political field.
Bhatia expressed his worries regarding non-proclaimed shares and two LLPs, wherein Vadra is a partner. He referred to a 2022 decision by the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal to show that Priyanka Gandhi owns 262,411 shares in AJL or National Herald through her firm, Young Indian.
The shares acquired were indicated by this tribunal order to have been acquired through two trusts in Jos, which Bhatia argued that her affidavit did not mention shareholding. He expounded on the fact that affording false or misleading information in an affidavit has very serious legal implications, saying that such a person may be barred from contesting an election.
In response, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate dismissed the BJP’s allegations, saying that Priyanka Gandhi did not hold any shares in AJL and had never done so. Earlier, there was controversy that the BJP had ever raised questions on Vadra’s declared assets of ₹64 crore, and the IT Department is seeking ₹75 crore.
Filing her affidavit, Priyanka Gandhi said her total assets are worth over ₹ 12 crore, of which the bungalow in Shimla is worth ₹ 5.63 crore. BJP pointed out that the Shimla property is valued much less than its market rate and charged the Congress with twisting rules in an attempt to get a prime piece of land in Himachal Pradesh.
