The Bihar panchayat polls were scheduled to happen in June this year. But it has been delayed due to the pandemic situation in the country. Now that the worsening situation has subsided a little, the Bihar state election commission, on Tuesday announced the dates of the Bihar panchayat polls. The voting will occur in a total of 11 phases and they will start from September 24. The second phase of the voting will start from Sept 29, which is when the 28 flood-affected districts will start their voting. December 2 is the last date of the elections.
The state election commissioner said, “As you know, panchayat election 2021 was supposed to happen in June but due to COVID-19 pandemic, everything got disturbed. After the COVID pandemic, the monsoon came. As soon as the monsoon gets over, we will start with the election process. There are 11 phases. In the first phase, 10 districts will go for the election. Generally, it is seen that after 15 September the flood situation becomes better. That is the reason why we are starting the election after it”.
The commissioner also divulged details about the number of posts that the election will be contested on. “The election will be conducted for a total of 2,55,022 posts that include an election for 8072 posts of Mukhiya; 1,13,307 posts of Gram panchayat members; 11,104 Panchayat Samiti members; 1,160 posts of Zila Parishad Members; 8072 posts of Gram Kachehri Sarpanch; 1,13,360 post of Gram Kachehri Panch”, he said. This time, the state will use the EVM machine for the first time as said by the election commissioner.
There are a total of 6.38 crore rural voters voting this year amongst which there are 3.35 crore male voters, 3.03 crore female voters, and 2471 other voters. The total no. of election booths set up in the state for the panchayat polls would be 1,13,891. The election commission took the decision after the state govt gave a nod to organize the polls.
