Renowned economist and chairman of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council, Bibek Debroy, died on Friday aged 69.
He has been credited for his extensive work on the Indian economy and the policies that led to the economic liberalization of the country.
Prime Minister Modi tweeted his condolences to X, describing Debroy as a towering scholar who was proficient in economics, history, culture, politics, and spirituality. The Prime Minister said, “He has made his contribution to the Indian intellectual map through his works. He also contributed immensely to our public policies, and he also loved to edit our ancient scriptures to make them relevant to the young people.” This acknowledgement also shows that Debroy has versatile contributions and dedication towards modern and traditional knowledge.
Debroy holds the Padma Shri award. He was the chancellor of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune, and was part of the NITI Aayog till June 2019. His bibliography comprises many books, articles, and contributions to the editorials of leading newspapers. His fields of specialization included macroeconomics and public finance, with writings in areas such as economic reform and governance and the railways.
Furthermore, Debroy was appreciated for his translation of the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita from Sanskrit, showing his love for India’s tradition.
Debroy started his teaching profession at Presidency College in Kolkata from 1979 to 1984. He then worked at the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics in Pune until 1987 then at the Institute of Foreign Trade in Delhi until 1993.
In 1993 he became the director of a Ministry of Finance and UNDP project for legal reforms, which he served in until 1998. He also served at the Department of Economic Affairs for ten years in his career.
