The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has demanded a Bharat Bandh on 21st August 2024, following the Supreme Court ruling on SC/ST reservations. On the first of August 2024, the Constitutional Bench of the country’s apex court gave a landmark judgment that has come under criticism from different quarters of society and polity. The main purpose of this bandh is to lay down the people’s anger against the elevated court and to compel it to roll back its decision.
Several organizations are expected to support the bandh, which is likely to be done with a focus on the displeasure of the Supreme Court verdict. To not compromise the lives of the public and reduce the unnecessary days that the services might be disrupted, senior police officials have conducted a preparatory meeting through a video link. The meeting was chaired by the principal secretary of Home Affairs and Director General of Police, including all the Divisions Commissioners, District Magistrates, SPs, etc. This, they said, was to plan how they would deal with the anticipated demonstrations and the manner in which order would be upheld during a protest.
Some of the key services will not be affected by the bandh and will continue to be open for service. Emergency facilities and ambulances will be operant for cases of emergent medical calamity. Clinics and other institutions affiliated with healthcare will remain operational to address the healthcare needs of numerous individuals in need of their services. Same as other essential shops, pharmancies will also be opened to sell necessary drugs.
Most shops are expected to be open in Bharat Bandh, while governmental departments, banks, schools, and colleges may be partially open, and there might be some disturbances. The authorities will mobilize security forces to prevent any disturbances during the bandh and to guarantee that the normal flow of operations of crucial services is not disrupted. The purpose here is to preserve justice and freedom of speech, and on the other hand, the authorities must prevent the disruption of normal life and key services during the nationwide strike.
