On Wednesday, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat pointed out the dangers that could be created by newer technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), to the job market and honor of labour. Addressing a gathering in Delhi to mark 70 years of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), the labour body linked with the RSS, Bhagwat was heard asking policy measures that would usher a society where technology works in the service of the people rather than render workers jobless.

“Technology is becoming very fast… The emergence of new technologies is associated with some questions. Will they open new jobs or absorb jobs? How will they affect unemployment?” Bhagwat asked. He pointed out that technology is non-negotiable but needs to be adjusted to suit India where workers interest and self-respect are not compromised. He observed that technology is cruel in human nature and diminishes respect of labour.

His utterances have been made at a time when the issue of AI and automation is gathering momentum in India, particularly over their effect on the unorganised sector which employs almost 90 per cent of the Indian workforce. Speaking of the weakness of this population segment, Bhagwat emphasized the necessity to immediately seriously consider this problem. “The unorganised sector is huge. There are also unorganised forces even in the organisation sector. We should strive to guarantee their good and their self-worth,” he said.

The approach taken by the BMS got special mentions by Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya who also spoke on the occasion saying that trade unions tend to pursue their methods depending on the ideological side of the fence, however, BMS moves in line with the Indian ethos. He made note of how the country was doing this through the “India Model”, which was put forth by a delegation led by BMS to International Labour Organization (ILO) in terms of how it was addressing the concerns of workers amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. “We dealt with COVID India Model. Mankind service is our way and that is why India has triumphed,” Mandaviya added.
