The criticism of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the Centre’s decision to land a US military aircraft carrying deported Indian migrants in Amritsar has become a political controversy. Accusing Mann of ‘degrading his own state,’ the BJP accused him of politicizing the issue. The Ministry of External Affairs was asked to explain the criteria it used to select the Amritsar landing site, as Mann claimed that the move was to tar Punjab.
Mann claimed that, while Modi was meeting then-US President Donald Trump, Indian immigrants were being shackled and deported during a press conference. “Do you think this is the gift Trump has given?” The deportation, he implied, was a diplomatic failure.
BJP’s Counterattack
Bhagwant Mann’s remarks were swiftly responded to by the BJP, which advised the politician not to play politics on sensitive national issues. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) prioritizes politics over national security charges, which have been leveled against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) by BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal. They (AAP leaders) do not care about the country’s security and just play political drama, he said.
Forming part of the BJP, its MLA, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, criticized the Punjab government under Mann and blamed illegal travel agents for robbing young Punjabis of their money. Sirsa added that these agents had deceived young people to part with their lands to fund their migration to the US through illegal routes. In addition, he alleged, the Punjab police in collusion with these agents, failed to take strict action against them.
AAP had failed Punjab; Sirsa argued that people were still looking to leave the state and then only across the board should there be better governance, claimed Sirsa. Instead of focusing on real problems, AAP is causing unnecessary drama, he said. The controversy is just a reflection of a severe political divide on the issue of Punjab’s migration and deportation of its youth from foreign countries.
