Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the announcement, calling it “a proud moment for every Indian across the world,” adding that he was ‘proud and happy.’ According to him, “The Gita and Natyashastra being placed in the UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register is a global recognition of our timeless wisdom and rich culture. Gita, Natyashastra have nourished civilisation and consciousness over centuries. And their insights still inspire the world.”
The Memory of the World programme of UNESCO identifies and safeguards texts, manuscripts, and documents that have been of great and enduring importance to mankind. A sacred Hindu scripture that is a conversation between Lord Krishna and warrior prince Arjuna about one’s dharma (or duty), the Bhagavad Gita is a source material for philosophical and spiritual guidance for all, and has been the inspiration of many a thinker, leader, and spiritual seeker.
Similarly, the Natyashastra by Bharat Muni, who is the ancient sage of performing arts, is considered the foundational book on Indian performing arts. It explores principles and techniques of theatre, dance, as well as music, and has broadly influenced the formation of classical art forms across India and far beyond.
In including these two ancient Indian texts, their universal relevance is reasserted, and the world is brought to bear on India’s grand contribution in terms of philosophy, culture, and performing arts. A reminder of India’s civilizational heritage, which has so deeply rooted itself into every facet of thoughts and artistic expressions around the world.
