Bengaluru: Opposition parties have convened in Bengaluru for a unity meeting, focused on establishing a cohesive anti-BJP alliance in preparation for the 2024 general elections. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge outlined the agenda for the meeting, which encompasses key issues crucial to the success of the proposed coalition.

The primary topics to be discussed include finalizing a suitable name for the alliance, establishing its organizational structure, and crafting a common agenda and campaign programme. The aim is to present a united front against the ruling BJP and create a robust strategy to address national welfare, social justice, and inclusive development.

To facilitate efficient decision-making, the parties will consider setting up separate subcommittees responsible for drafting the alliance’s common agenda and communication points. Additionally, they will chart a joint programme involving rallies, conventions, and agitations, to galvanize public support.

Seat-sharing remains a crucial aspect of the alliance-building process, and the leaders will deliberate on an approach for allocating seats on a state-to-state basis.

Moreover the gathering will delve into the issues revolving around Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Deliberate, on improvements to the Election Commission with the goal of upholding fair and transparent elections.

During the evening of the Opposition dinner organized by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah prominent figures, from 26 opposition parties came together to participate. Reiterating their commitment to unity, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized the slogan “United We Stand” and expressed optimism about working together to pursue common goals of national welfare and development.

However, ahead of the meeting, certain controversies emerged, with posters surfacing at a key traffic junction in Bengaluru, blaming Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for the Sultanganj bridge collapse in his state. 

Despite these obstacles the opposition parties remain resolute in their determination to concentrate on their goals and work together closely to pose a strong challenge, to the ruling party in the forthcoming elections. The Bengaluru unity meeting holds the potential to shape the trajectory of opposition politics in India and foster a strong alliance that can effectively address the nation’s challenges and aspirations.
