On Friday, a special court in Bengaluru passed a ground-breaking judgment convicting former Member of parliament and the Janata Dal (Secular) leader Prajwal Revanna in a top-level sexual abuse and rape case. This conviction is in regard to the initial case of rape that was reported against him in the case of Holenarasipura Rural Police Station in Hassan region, Karnataka. This amounts to a major twist in one of the most sensational criminal cases within the current political history.

Going by the reports of a news agency, the trial in this case had ended with the Special Court for People representatives that had heard hundreds of testimonies and had reviewed the evidence marshaled by both sides on July 18, 2024. On August 1, 2025, the court had postponed its decision and passed the conviction but the sentencing is set to be announced on Saturday, August 2.

Prajwal Revanna has a total of four criminal cases against him all relating to the claims of sexual assault and exploitation. These incidents became known following the leak of more than 2,000 videos of obscene content that supposedly featured Revanna and several women, last year. The videos caused an outrage in society and various accusations to be made by several women.

It was in April 2024 when a woman who once worked as domestic help at the farmhouse belonging to Revanna and her family placed the first complaint that resulted in her being convicted on Friday. She claimed to have been violated a number of times, starting in 2021, and blackmailed with compromising videos in case she reported the abuse.

This belief is likely to produce significant political and legal consequences as the family of Revanna plays a huge role in Karnataka politics. Everything now awaits the sentencing that will be made by the court which will decide how much he is supposed to be punished.
