A man arrested by the Mumbai police on the case of a 1 crore rupee extortion attempt on comedian Kapil Sharma has a West Bengal address. The suspected defendant, known as Dilip Choudhary, was arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch, and the police used threatening videos and calls, which had been sent to the renowned comedian-actor, to track him down, officials claimed.
As per the police, Choudhary threatened in the name of known gangsters Rohit Godara and Goldy Brar that he would take 1 crore from Kapil Sharma. It was said that the accused made an estimated seven phone calls to the comedian on September 22 and 23, where he threatened him by phone and video.
Dilip Choudhary was arrested and sent to the police custody till September 30. It is being examined by the investigators that he may have had some personal ties to the gangsters that he was mentioning, or he was simply using their names as a scapegoat to intimidate and manipulate the comedian.
In another, but still closely related, controversy, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has sent a notice to the comedy show of Kapil Sharma, titled The Great Indian Kapil Show, after one of its recent episodes mentioned Mumbai by its old name, Bombay. The leader of the MNS party, Ameya Khopkar, a leader of the film wing, took to social media to speak on the matter, stating that the city has been legally recognised as Mumbai since 1995 by the Maharashtra government and since 1996 by the Central government.
Khopkar reiterated that it is not respectful to the city of Bombay that Bollywood stars, MPs in the Rajya Sabha, and anchors in the show continue using the name Bombay. He encouraged the show to refer to Mumbai in all future instances, as a polite request-cum- warning not to disrespect the official name of the city.
The two changes have put Kapil Sharma and his show in the spotlight, with the government still investigating the extortion plot and other political parties in the area weighing in on the cultural sensitivity.
