At least eight people perished in a bus accident that happened on Friday in Bathinda, Punjab. Bathinda Urban MLA Jagroop Singh Gill said the incident took five lives instantly, and three other passengers died due to injuries while undergoing treatment. Of the 18 others also who got injured in the incident, they are being treated at Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh Civil Hospital today at Bathinda city.
Later, MLA Jagroop Singh Gill came to visit the hospital and got a briefing from the Bathinda Civil Surgeon, Dr Ramandeep Singla. “The health officials have been directed to make sure those that were injured are accorded proper treatment. Rescue and relief operations are being followed up closely,” Gill told a news agency.
The mishap took place near Jiwan Singh Wala village, where a private bus coming from Talwandi Sabo to Bathinda city over-powered the breaks and rammed through a bridge railing to fall into a drain. This accident occurred during a downpour; thus, this seems to have played part and parcel in the cause of the accident. Today, there is a search and rescue mission being conducted by top officials of civil and police administrations.
Testimonies of the witnesses showed that the bus slid before overturning on the bridge’s railing before falling into the drain. The drain got filled with dirty water,r aspiring to the surface of the operation in a bid to rescue those trapped. The district authorities first have to establish the identities of the people who died in the incident and have stated their commitment to ensure that a proper probe into the occurrence is conducted in a bid to establish the true reason behind the tragedy.
Thus, the issue of road safety, particularly in adverse environmental conditions, seems to require enhanced measures. The state government has called for a policy change that will protect women and try to attend to the affected families while providing justice for the victims.
