Khalilur Rahman, Bangladesh national security advisor and one of the most important figures in the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus will visit India next week as bilateral relations continue to become strained. As per those who are aware of the way things are unfolding, Rahman will visit New Delhi to attend a regional security meeting, which will be a symbolic high-level interaction between the two neighbours since 2024 political unrest redefined the leadership structure in Bangladesh.

Rahman is regarded as one of the most powerful personalities in the caretaker government and will become only the second Bangladeshi government official to visit India since the overthrow of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024 due to colossal protests led by students. Hasina later ran away to India, a move that made the relationship between the two nations even more problematic.

Rahman is also due to visit in New Delhi on November 19, before the November 20 Colombo Security Conclave (CSC) meeting. His involvement is by the request of the National Security Adviser of India Ajit Doval, but no official statement has been made by either party so far.

It was also suggested by the officials that a sidelining meeting between Rahman and Doval at the conclave is probable. This would be a notable gathering that would provide the two countries with an opportunity to review how their relationship has split completely out of proportion with the interim government led by Yunus.

Traditionally, India and Bangladesh have been closely cooperating in the areas of security, trade, connectivity and border management. The political turmoil in Dhaka and the new power politics have, however, brought about uncertainty and mistrust. This visit by Rahman is thus perceived as a valuable chance to re-establish communications, settle scores and perhaps normalise relations in a time of diplomatic storm.

The result of the visit will be closely monitored in both countries as it can be the mark of the future of India-Bangladesh relations.
