With heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, security has increased dramatically at the Bangladesh border shared with India’s northeastern states. The authorities have intensified preventive measures aimed at checking any possible cross-border infiltration and the security of residents at the local level.
Fortunately, four northeastern states –Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Assam- share about 1,880 kilometers of border with Bangladesh. Although a large part of the border is fenced, the poetry sections go under the fence and allow illicit crossing and illegal activities. To ease these apprehensions, security forces have curtailed nightlife and deployed more units in neighbouring villages. Such a move is just an effort to reinforce surveillance and curb moves across the border without authorization.
In Tripura, which shares an 856-kilometer-long border with Bangladesh on three sides, recently, the Chief Minister Manik Saha had a high-level meeting with senior officials of BSF, Assam Rifles, Tripura Police, and intelligence agencies. The meeting discussed current security strategies and improved coordination of various agencies to achieve more assimilation of border management.
In Meghalaya, which has a 443-kilometre-long border with Bangladesh, BSF Inspector General O.P. Upadhyay has informed that an Increase in security operations by the force using the advanced electronic gadgets and surveillance systems is underway. Patrols, as well as routine inspection of the border line, are continuing on important points of the line, especially in particularly sensitive areas.
Assam and Mizoram, 263 km and 318 km long at the border, the system has also witnessed increased vigilance, while local administrations combined with central forces are operational. These coordination efforts reflect an elevated attitude of preparedness to handle whatever fallout might ensue from the growing tension between India and Pakistan, while also securing regional security, as well as national security.
