West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday urged the central government to ask for a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Bangladesh to deal with the current political crisis in neighbouring Bangladesh. She also requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to come to the aid of persecuted Indians trapped abroad.

Thus, in her statement to the Union Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar Banerjee called on the Union government to come and report to the Parliament the official position of India on the deepening crisis. “If the Prime Minister can not handle this issue, he and his government should make a very strong statement now during the winter session”, she said.

According to the report, the condition in Bangladesh worsened because of claimed acts of violence against Hindus and Other minorities, including the arrest of Hindu priests. Banerjee said that she cannot speak on bilateral matters as Bengal is only a part of the nation, but since the situation is so serious, she is forced to bring up the issue.

“Due to new events that have occurred, the testimonies of people who have relatives in Bangladesh, and meetings with representatives of ISKCON in the Assembly, it is impossible to remain silent. They are talking of arrests and suffering of those crossing over to our side, something that requires action,” said Kuffour.

Banerjee called on the federal government to talk with Dhaka authorities and, if needed, discuss and seek assistance from the United Nations. To our concern, she called for action immediately for the rescue and rehabilitation of the affected Indians.

We are also willing to host and provide them with assistance if they decide it is necessary.” As for the primary need, the basic food – it does not trouble us to split one roti between us. These are their words, but Bengal will not let them go hungry,” she said, emphasizing on her government’s provision of relief items to the people.
