Mumbai: An FIR has been filed against the rapper Badshah and 40 others, including actors like Sanjay Dutt for allegedly promoting the viewing of the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches on the Fairplay betting app, confirmed a police official.
Viacom 18 in their complaint said that they had the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) to stream the matches, but the matches were illegally streamed on Fairplay. The complaint further said that some actors promoted the tournament on the Fairplay app. A case of digital piracy has been filed and more actors are likely to be summoned in the case.
Lawyer Prashant Patil who represents Badshah said, “My client, Mr Badshah was summoned by the Cyber Crime Department of Mumbai Police for the matter pertaining to FairPlay app. There is an alleged complaint filed against Fairplay app for breaching the copyrights of a reputed company and broadcasting IPL cricket matches. Pertaining to these allegations, certain celebrities/artists were summoned in the capacity of witness.”
ED is currently probing the Mahadev Book App for money laundering and the Fairplay App is connected to it as it was promoted by Sourabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal.
Earlier on October 4, 2023, ED summoned Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor regarding his involvement with the Mahadev betting app case. He had to appear before the ED on October 6th. Ranbir Kapoor had been endorsing the betting app, leading to his summons as part of the investigation.
Sources within the ED state that Ranbir Kapoor is being summoned to provide his statement as a witness in this case. The ED is particularly interested in determining when he started endorsing the app, how much he was compensated for his activities and whether payments were made via checks or cash.
