The far-reaching benefits of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance programme were underlined by President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday when she said that over 11 crore free medical treatment had been given in hospitals in India up to the year before. She was speaking of a joint sitting of Parliament at the beginning of the Budget session, when she remarked that 2.5 crore patients in themselves obtained free treatment under the scheme last year.
Highlighting the interests of the government in senior citizens, the President stated that almost one crore of Vay Vandana cards have already been issued within the last one-and-a-half year. Consequently, approximately eight lakh elderly have been given free inpatient care in hospitals implying that the elderly have improved access to healthcare.
Murmu also noted that healthcare service has become much more available at the grassroot level, and approximately 1.8 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs have been set up in the state. She opined that these centres have assisted in bringing quality medical care closer to the homes of people especially to rural and remote areas.
Placing emphasis on disease control efforts, the President reported that the government has made bold steps towards fighting key health issues. Through the Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, more than 6.5 crore citizens have been screened, making a great contribution to the control of the disease in some of the tribal regions.
She also cited the effectiveness of mission-mode campaigns in the control of diseases like Japanese Encephalitis with reference particularly to the less-developed and rural areas of Uttar Pradesh. Murmu further said that India has made one of its greatest milestones in terms of public health and the world health organisation had announced that the country is trachoma free.
