By-elections were announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday in an announcement of vacant Assembly seats in a few states (six states). The voting will come in two stages in April and the counting of votes in May as indicated by the poll body.
According to the list released by the Election Commission, the states of Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland and Tripura are to vote on April 9. In the meantime, voters in Gujarat and Maharashtra are to vote in the second phase on April 23. Voting will be conducted on May 4 on the counting of votes of all the by-elections and the final result will be announced.
The by-elections are conducted as a part of filling in the lapses that have occurred in the different assembly constituencies in the six states. The vacancies are usually as a result of resignation or disqualification of the sitting legislators or where the elected representatives got promoted to other offices. According to the Election Commission, such by-polls are needed in order to make sure that such constituencies still had a proper representation in their respective assemblies.
The process of the election in the given constituencies starts with the announcement of the schedule. As the notification has been issued, the political parties are likely to put more efforts in their campaigns and decide on the candidates who would fill the seats entering polls. Local leaders and party workers would also tend to start outreach programs to attract voters in the weekends.
The Election Commission has also stated that there would be all the conditions observed to make the polling smooth, free, and fair. The poll bound constituencies will be deployed with security forces, polling officials, and election observers to ensure that the electoral process is transparent.
