Assam: As floods in the northeastern state of Assam wreaked havoc across villages, around 500 families from two villages of the Jamunamukh district since then have been living on the rails, the only high ground that did not submerge.
After almost losing everything, people from Changjurai and Patia Pathar villages gathered their loved ones and moved in search of life. The villagers who have taken refugees under temporary sheds made of tarpaulin sheets, claimed they have not received much help from the govt and district administration since being afflicted.
Around 8 lakh people across 2,585 villages in29 districts of the state have been scrambled by the calamity. Around 14 people died in the floods and the landslides triggered by the pre-monsoon rains. As many as 86,772 people have taken shelter in 343 relief camps while 411 distribution centres are also operational. The deployed NRDF, SDRF, and army have evacuated 21,844 people so far. The state government has announced monetary assistance of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of those who have lost their lives.
The worst-affected districts include Nagaon, Cachar, Karimganj, Hojai, Darrang, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Bajali, Baksa, Biswanath, and Lakhimpur. Officials of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that the four deaths were reported from Cachar (2), Nagaon, and Lakhimpur districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued heavy rainfall warning in Assam and surrounding states till 18 May 2022, with widespread rain predicted across the state.
