Dispur- The flood situation in Assam continues to be critical as heavy overnight rainfall, and the release of water from the Kurichhu Dam in Bhutan have led to rising water levels in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. Over 34,000 people are currently grappling with the deluge across nine state districts.

The Royal Government of Bhutan and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have issued warnings about the possibility of heavy to hefty rainfall in the upper catchment areas, which could further exacerbate the flood situation. The Bhutan Government’s weather advisory stated that isolated regions of the country might experience cloudy weather with light to moderate rainfall in the coming days, potentially impacting the water levels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries.

The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for 24 hours, indicating immediate action, followed by an ‘Orange Alert’ for the subsequent day and a ‘Yellow Alert’ for the day after. These alerts signify the level of preparedness required in the face of potential rainfall and flood risks.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the districts of Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Sonitpur, and Udalguri have been significantly affected by the floods. The authorities closely monitor the situation and undertake relief efforts to support the affected population.
