Allahabad: Hearing the Lakhimpur case, the Lucknow bench of Allahabad HC on Thursday granted bail to prime accused Ashish Mishra. Mishra alias Monu was arrested on October 12th and remained in judicial custody after a single bench Judge on January 18th reserved Mishra’s bail plea for orders.

The relief to Mishra comes a day after PM Modi in an interview has cited that the UP Govt was conducting a ‘transparent probe’ in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, in which eight people including four farmers were killed.  “The state government gave its consent for whatever committee the Supreme Court wanted, for whichever judge the Supreme Court wanted for the probe. The state government is working transparently,” the Prime Minister said.

On October 3rd, a vehicle had allegedly run over farmers protesting against the farm laws. Eye witnesses blamed son of the Union Minister for Home Affairs Ajay Mishra ‘Teni’ for the violence. The SIT probing the incident had filed a charge sheet in October where Ajay Mishra was named as the main accused along with 12 more arrested. While his father was not named as an accused in the charge sheet, his relative Virendra Shukla was charged under Section 201 of the Indian Penal Code for causing the disappearance of evidence.
