Asaduddin Owaisi, president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), launched a scathing critique of the Central government’s Waqf (Amendment) Bill on Saturday, framing it as an act of expropriation. He vehemently alleged that the legislation is not an amendment but a “looters (amendment) law,” designed to facilitate the seizure of waqf properties.

Owaisi’s primary contention centers on his belief that the bill grants undue authority to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government to usurp assets dedicated to religious and charitable purposes within the Muslim community. He argues that the government is systematically targeting waqf properties, which are held in trust for various community welfare activities, including education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.

He further asserted that the bill undermines the autonomy of waqf boards and disregards the historical and legal sanctity of these properties. Owaisi portrayed the legislation as a manifestation of the government’s alleged anti-Muslim agenda, accusing them of attempting to economically marginalize the community by seizing their assets.

Owaisi’s strong rhetoric reflects the deep-seated apprehensions within certain segments of the Muslim community regarding the government’s intentions. He has positioned himself as a vocal defender of minority rights and has consistently challenged the government’s policies, particularly those perceived as discriminatory. His criticism of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is consistent with his broader political stance, which emphasizes the protection of Muslim interests and the preservation of their cultural and religious heritage.
