At a time when the issue of imposition of Hindi in the country continues to reignite a national debate in its wake, the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, has given his categorical stand by terming Hindi the united language of his linguistically diverse state. Khandu told a news agency that there is nothing wrong with learning Hindi since it is a handy means of communication in Arunachal Pradesh, which boasts more than 100 dialects and 26 significant tribes.
Khandu articulated what has become obvious throughout our state, which has so many tribes with different languages or dialects, the common denominator is Hindi. “When I speak using my own dialect, people speaking other tribes will not understand me. That is why we practice Hindi among ourselves, all it is the link that we all share.”
The Chief Minister pointed out that Hindi has been included in the school curriculum of Arunachal since the very inception of the education system, which was read in Arunachal, and its prevalence has been gradually developed. He continued: “There could be grammatical errors with its usage, but in villages even those far and away people know and can speak Hindi. Hindi is the most popular language used during village discussions, election campaigns and on the Assembly floor.”
Another important distinction on the practical utility of Hindi in everyday life and in the state government’s everyday life that was highlighted by Khandu was the strategic location of the state of Arunachal on the border with the international border. The Army and the Border Roads Organisation are Security forces that work in our state, and the majority of their personnel can speak Hindi. This only adds to the fact that the language is a unifier, he indicated.
In making Hindi more practical and acceptable in Arunachal Pradesh, Khandu has tried to step down suspicions over the language row, but he has reduced the issue to one of practicability and homogeneity within the state.
