New Delhi: Amidst the ongoing panic created after the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement on the trace of a new variant of the COVID-19 virus, a passenger arrived at Tamil Nadu, India, who was tested positive with the COVID-19 virus.
The passenger arrived in Tamil Nadu on Monday and was tested, while the report came positive. Though it is not confirmed whether the virus the man is carrying is the new variant or not, an atmosphere of stress has automatically been created after the announcement.
Tamil Nadu Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan announced on Tuesday that a man arriving from the UK has been tested positive for COVID-19 on the previous day. He also added that the virus is not yet confirmed to be the new strain that the UK Prime Minister announced about.
Radhakrishnan remarked – “We are testing for COVID-19 passengers of flights originating or halting in the UK. One such passenger tested positive yesterday. It’s incorrect to presume that he is infected with the UK variant of COVID. We will send his samples to NIV in Pune”. The Health Secretary added that “State authorities are also identifying the people who traveled to the UK in the last 10 days and ensuring they all test negative in RT-PCR testing”.
Notably, Britain Prime Minister Boris Johnson on December 20 announced on Twitter about the new variant of the virus that has been traced by the experts. “Given the early evidence we have on this new variant of the virus and the potential risk it poses, it is with a heavy heart that I must tell you we cannot continue with Christmas as planned”.
