Udhampur: Army on Wednesday said that it killed two terrorists in the gunfight which broke out earlier in the Khandara region of Basantgarh in Jammu’s Udhampur. A gunfight broke out between security forces and terrorists in Udhampur district earlier in the day. Upon being informed about the presence of terrorists in the region, paramilitary troops and police personnel reached Basantgarh and cordoned off the area.
The terrorists opened fire on personnel, following which the security forces retaliated. The terrorists were killed hours after a BSF jawan was injured in an unprovoked firing on the international border. The incident took place around 02.35 a.m. “An incident of unprovoked firing was reported in Akhnoor area from across the border. In this incident, one BSF constable, Durba Jyoti Das, sustained injuries. He was subsequently shifted to hospital,” the BSF said.
“On 11 Sept 2024 at about 02:35 AM, incident of unprovoked firing in Akhnoor area from across the border happened and which was befittingly responded by the BSF. One BSF personnel sustained injuries in Pak firing. Troops are on high alert,” BSF said in a statement.
The Union Territory is witnessing sporadic incidents of violence ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls, the first elections in the region in 10 years.
The three-phase elections will begin on September 18, with the second and third phases on September 25 and October 1, respectively. The counting of votes will take place on October 8.
