On Friday, an army jawan was killed and two others were injured in a landmine explosion on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district. This blast was committed during a normal patrol on a sensitive border region where tension already existed as soldiers had intensified their patrolling within the region over the past few weeks.

According to the officials, the blast site is located near the places where the shelling occurred during Operation Sindoor when Pakistan tried to take some retaliatory action against India. The security agencies have been on high alert ever since then, with several search operations being conducted in the forward areas of Rajouri and Poonch.

In May, soldiers opened fire following the detection of unusual movement in the Kiri Sector of the Chingus area in Rajouri. Drones have been used, and more than 25 rounds were fired, but no infiltrator was detected. Subsequently, after that incident, a series of joint search and seizure missions between the Army, CRPF, and the local police were carried out in various regions, such as Surankote, Mendhar, Sari, Pathankot, Chandimarh, and Kaagwali, without arresting anyone.

In the valley, security is still dense due to the recent continuous Amarnath Yatra, which has attracted many pilgrims since it was started. There are also preparations to be made for the Budha Amarnath Yatra, which is to be held between July 28 and August 9.

A high-level review meeting, presided over by DGP Nalin Prabhat, senior officers, such as Special DGP Javaid Gillani, IGP Bhimsen Tuti, and IG CRPF Gopal K Rao, took place in Poonch earlier this week to analyse pilgrimage-security arrangements. The meeting highlighted the necessity to have a better level of vigilance as they had faced infiltration and enemy activity on the LoC.

In response to the Friday blast of a landmine, the Army has stepped up the surveillance and combing activities to guarantee the safety of the troops and other citizens in the border villages.
