Indian Army initiates HADR operations to aid trapped miners. Dima Hasao contains the flooded ‘3 Kilo’ coal mine on the Assam & Meghalaya border. It shows that the Army is ready to deploy resources as and when called into disaster-prone terrains.

At 6:30 AM of the morning, the first responder team from the 32 Assam Rifles Pathfinder Unit came into the site to evaluate the disaster and take activities into implementing early disaster relief operations. They were there primarily for espionage, to gather intelligence, and to coordinate and plan their rescue operation.

Since the task is very sensitive, the Army has brought an Engineer Task Force (ETF) headed by the Commanding Officer of an Engineer Regiment. Well-equipped and with PARA diving specialists, the ETF is on its way to the site, which means that on the flooded mine, more problems and difficulties are expected to be met by professionals. These specialists anticipated to be a major shock in reaching out and securing parts of the mine beneath the sea level.

Other crews from the Assam Rifles and the ETF are also due to arrive to augment the rescue squads. For the purpose of better co-ordination and operational planning, aerial assets have been put into use. A helicopter that has some of the senior officials on board, including the Chief Engineer of the Corps HQ in Dimapur, the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East), and the Commanding Officer of Parents unit PARA, is on aerial surveillance. These evaluations will help sharpen methods for rescuing the trapped individuals in real time.

Rescue operations have proven difficult primarily because the mine is located deep in the forests and does not have the necessary amenities. However, the Army and government officials are not relenting. All measures humanly possible are being employed to accelerate the mission and to safely retrieve the trapped miners.
