The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) has officially named April 2025 the second warmest April on record, which is a continuation of an alarming global temperature anomaly trend. The mean global surface air temperature for April was 14.96 °c (around 0.60 °c above the 1991–2020 average for the month). Much more importantly, the year April 2025 was 1.51°C hotter than estimated for the preindustrial period (1850–1900), signifying the ongoing influence of climate change.

It’s the 21st time since the 22 months of keeping track of temperature have begun to exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, or what climate scientists termed a critical level for global warming in the Paris accord, which is meant to be beyond the most catastrophic effects. Global temperatures from May 2024 to April 2025 averaged 0.70°C above the 1991–2020 average and 1.58°C above preindustrial.

April of this year was the second hottest April ever globally, after April 2020, which continued the long string of months that have gone over 1.5ºC above preindustrial, Samantha Burgess, Strategic Lead for Climate at the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) explained. “As such, continuous climate monitoring is an important instrument for understanding and acting upon the evolving changes in our climate system.”

Eastern Europe, western Russia, Kazakhstan, and Norway were among the areas of Europe that experienced widespread above-average temperatures. On the other hand, colder than average conditions were felt in Türkiye, parts of Bulgaria and Romania, the Crimean Peninsula and northern Fennoscandia.

While there were temperature spikes in the Russian Far East, west-central Asia, much of North America, parts of Australia, and Antarctica. In April, sea surface temperatures (SSTs) were the second warmest on record, falling just 0.15°C short of the record set in 2024. In the northeast North Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea, SSTs were especially high and continued to fuel climate concerns.
