According to media reports citing Western Railway’s Vadodara Division officials, an unknown person attempted to cause another train derailment by removing fishplates and keys from a railway track near Gujarat’s Kim Railway Station in Surat.
Western Railway claims that unknown people in the Vadodara division unlocked the fishplate and several keys from the UP line track and placed them on the same track close to the Kim railway station. However service was soon restored.
With the use of fish bolts, fishplates—specialized rolled sections—are used to join railroad rails end to end. The term “fishplate” is derived from the shape of this fitting, which resembles a fish. Train movement resumed after railway the ground staff responded quickly to the situation and removed the obstruction.
Recent incidents of attempts to derail trains
On September 8, two cement blocks were placed on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor’s tracks in an attempt to derail a loaded goods train in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan. Thankfully, no major incidents happened when a goods train struck the blocks, which each weighed about 70 kg, according to railway officials.
The incident happened along the Phulera-Ahmedabad section of the corridor, between the stations of Saradhna and Bangad. According to a freight corridor official, an investigation has been launched and a case has been filed.
