Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai performed a most dramatic protest in Coimbatore, where he flogged himself with a strap as a token protest against the gang rape of a 19-year-old student on the Anna University campus. The incident that happened on Monday night has since drawn the masses’ anger and calls for an immediate arrest of the culprits.
While giving a press conference on Thursday, Annamalai said he intended to demonstrate against the order and whip himself six times in front of his house. He also announced 48 fasts and vowed not to put on shoes until the DMK government in Tamil Nadu is replaced. Speaking to the media, Annamalai said: “I will pray to the six-armed Murugan forjustice and I will lead protest in front of every BJP member’s house,” Top highlight his whole intention of ensuring that the government is held responsible.
There were protest marches held by BJP and AIADMK leaders and cadres on December 26 across the state. Annamalai and many other leaders were arrested by police during the protest demonstration. Tamilisai Soundararajan accused BJP and the DMK-led state government of stifling the opposition’s voice. “This is atrocious. They want to gag our voice,” he said, briefing a news agency, as he slammed the government’s handling of the rising public fury.
The protest unveils the political contention in Tamil Nadu; BJP and allies have the DMK government on the mat over the administrative lapses, especially on women’s safety. 2009 is another sad year for students with the loss of young lives in a fire mishap at Anna University and later on many more in various parts of the country; people and citizens, as well as activists, are demanding even more rigorous implementation of safety measures on campuses.
Such actions by Annamalai are dramatic, like those of many other BJP leaders, to ensure that the problem escalates and that the state government acts in the shortest time possible to address the issue and purge society of such heinous incidences in the future.
