The recent tensions between India and Maldives, sparked by derogatory remarks from certain Maldivian leaders following PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, have drawn attention to Indian tourist destinations, especially coastal regions and islands like Andaman & Nicobar. In the midst of this ongoing debate, Chief Secretary Keshav Chandra of Andaman and Nicobar Islands has proudly emphasized the advantages of the Indian Union territory, highlighting its pristine beaches, adventure opportunities, and tourism facilities compared to other islands in the Indian Ocean Region.

In an interview with PTI, Chandra underscored the administration’s efforts to attract tourists and elevate standards to international levels. “A&NI boasts pristine natural beauty, picturesque islands with beautiful sandy beaches offering a wide range of activities like sunbathing, snorkeling, swimming, game fishing, sunset/sunrise sighting, bird watching, trekking, kayaking, etc.,” mentioned Chandra.

He detailed various initiatives taken by the administration to promote tourism, such as the development of a five-star property at Megapode in Port Blair through a public-private partnership and leasing land at Radha Nagar Beach in Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island). Chandra also shared ongoing discussions with airline companies to ensure affordable ticket prices for tourists. The chief secretary revealed that efforts were underway to enable tourists to witness bio-luminescence in the sea, with beaches now open during late-night hours.

“Beaches are now being opened during late-night hours for tourists to enjoy the heavenly sight of the landscape as well as the bio-luminescence. Efforts are being made to reach out to more airline operators that will lead to competitive and affordable pricing of tickets for tourists,” explained the chief secretary.

Moreover, the UT administration is exploring the possibility of international connectivity from Port Blair to Southeast Asian countries, where tourism is a significant economic sector. This could result in cheaper air connectivity to these Southeast Asian countries due to their proximity to Port Blair, added Chandra.
