New Delhi: Khadoor Sahib’s new MP, Amritpal Singh, a pro-Khalistan activist, is to be administered the oath of a Lok Sabha member on July 5. This follows clearance from both the state and the central agencies. Singh is at present under detention under NSA in Dibrugarh jail in Assam, and he will be flown to Delhi to administer an oath.
The official spokesman of the Punjab government revealed that all formal requirements for Amritpal Singh’s swearing ceremony have been met. “He will take an oath on July 5 and will be produced in Dibrugarh Jail,” the official said. This comes after a letter was sent to the Speaker of the lower House of Parliament, Om Birla, by the Punjab government for the bearded boy, Amritpal Singh, asking for permission be granted for him to be released temporarily or on parole for the oath.
Imaan Singh Khara, a legal adviser of Amritpal, said it was submitted to the Punjab government through the jail superintendent on June 9 under Section 15 of the NSA. This section enables the periodic liberation of a detained person with or without bond or with a bond as per the government stipulations. This letter was forwarded by the said Jail Superintendent to the Amritsar DC, who, in turn, referred the same to the state Government headquarters with the request to prevail upon the Hon’ble Speaker to allow Amritpal to take the oath of office.
Another counsel for Amritpal Singh, Rajdev Singh Khalsa, said that the Punjab home secretary had addressed the letter to the Speaker, Lok Sabha. The 60 days start on June 25. When the Speaker receives it, then the decision regarding oath-taking can be made. The speaker consults the home department for its decision, Khalsa said. Other sources verified this process in the governmental structure of Punjab, making a similar reference to the approval of the situation by the National Investigation Agency of India (NIA) in the case of jailed Kashmiri leader Sheikh Abdul Rashid.
